Notes:
The opening goal of the match came in the 37th minute when Mia Hamm drove up the center of the field and then played the ball to Kristine Lilly on the left. Lilly stutter stepped, set up her left foot and unleashed a shot into the lower right corner.
Mexico pulled even in the 57th minute when Iris Mora won a ball in the midfield and sent a through ball to Maribel Dominguez who sped past the U.S. defense and sent her shot under U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo. Dominguez's tally was Mexico's first ever against the U.S. In five previous losses, Mexico had been outscored by the U.S. 41-0.
Solo, making her third appearance for the U.S., came well off of her line eight minutes later to clear a ball, but shanked her kick. Mora gathered up the ball and fired it towards goal. Bouncing several times, the ball nestled into the empty goal as Mexico took a 2-1 lead.
The U.S. tied the game in the 70th minute when Nikki Serlenga won a header in the midfield. Cindy Parlow picked the ball up and dribbled to the top of the penalty box before unleashing a bouncing shot. Mexican goalkeeper Linnea Quinones got her hands on the shot but couldn't keep the ball from going into the lower left corner of the goal.
Five minutes later Parlow tallied the gamewinner. From the left flank, Tiffeny Milbrett served the ball into the box. The ball squirted out to Parlow standing outside of the box whose 25-yard shot zipped into the upper right 90.
