Notes:
Cindy Parlow earned a penalty kick in the 74th minute when she tackled the ball away from Canadian defender Sharolta Nonen and then beat Marie-Claude Dion, who took her down from behind. Kristine Lilly converted the penalty kick sending it into the right corner for her first goal in 16 matches (the longest goalless stretch of her career).

Canada equalized quickly as a minute later Kristina Kiss knocked a free kick into the box. Briana Scurry attempted to punch the ball away but missed. Amy Walsh got her head on the ball sending it over Scurry and into the goal.

Scurry replaced starting U.S. goalkeeper Siri Mullinix in the 23rd minute after Mullinix suffered a contusion on her right knee following a cleats-up challenge by Canadian striker Charmaine Hooper, who received a yellow card on the play.

Michelle Akers' appearance was the 153rd and final of her international career. On August 24, she announced her immediate retirement due to a nagging shoulder injury and the effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The tie snapped the United States' 21-game winning streak against Canada.
