Notes:
Russia scored in the 28th minute when Olga Letushova lofted a pass to the top right edge of the penalty box. U.S. defender Kate Sobrero and Russian forward Natalia Barbashina went up for the ball, but neither were able to reach it. Barbashina, however, alertly caught up with the bouncing ball and sent a shot past Briana Scurry and into the far corner.

The U.S. was awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute when Mia Hamm chipped a corner kick into the box where Russian defender Olga Sergaeva awkwardly nodded the ball off her right hand. Joy Fawcett drove her low shot into the right corner to knot the match.

In the early going while challenging for a ball, Michelle Akers fell and landed on her surgically repaired right shoulder. She left the match in the 26th minute and was replaced three minutes later by Nikki Serlenga.
