Notes:
The USA opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Julie Foudy drove a cross in front of the goal from deep in the left corner. Brazilian goalkeeper Maravilha got both hands on the ball, but it popped loose and Cindy Parlow powered it into the back of the net with her head for the early 1-0 lead.

As the match pushed into its final 10 minutes, Carla Overbeck took a goal kick which Michelle Akers nodded on to Mia Hamm. Entering the 18-yard box, Hamm was shoved to the ground by Elane drawing a penalty kick, which Akers deposited into the right corner for the 2-0 margin of victory.

Briana Scurry was spectacular against Brazil making several key saves including deflecting a Pretinha shot wide in the 30th minute, tipping a 35-yard shot by Nene over the crossbar in the 46th minute, getting a hand on another Nene shot in the 56th minute and making a diving two-handed stop on another Pretinha shot in the 83rd minute.

Brandi Chastain earned the 100th cap of her career in this match.
