Notes:
The USA fell behind just five minutes into the match when Germany's Maren Meinert sent what looked to be a harmless through ball into the U.S. box. Brandi Chastain ran back to play the ball while goalkeeper Briana Scurry came off her line to provide a target for a backpass. Chastain, however, misread Scurry's movement and instead put the backpass behind her and into her own goal.
In the 16th minute with the Germans playing down a player as Bettina Wiegmann was being treated for an injury off the field, the U.S. equalized. Michelle Akers unleashed a shot which ricocheted off of Maren Meinert's arm to Tiffeny Milbrett at the penalty spot. Milbrett sent her shot inside of the left post to knot the score.
The fiesty German side pulled back in front just before halftime. During injury time, Sandra Smisek sent a pass to Wiegmann who turned to her left and fired a shot from outside of the 18-yard box into the left corner for a 2-1 advantage.
Chastain redeemed herself for her earlier mental error in the 49th minute. Mia Hamm took a corner kick from the left side drilling it to the far post. Steffi Jones, unable to clear it, sent the ball to Chastain who fired it into the back of the net from in front of the goal. With the scored now tied at 2-2, relief was on Chastain's face as she slid to the ground in celebration.
The game-winner came in the 66th minute. A minute earlier Shannon MacMillan entered the match for Julie Foudy as Milbrett lined up a corner kick. Milbrett gave way to MacMillan on the corner and with her first touch of the match MacMillan drilled her serve to the near post where Joy Fawcett nodded the ball into the goal for the 3-2 win.
President Bill Clinton congratulated the team on their victory in the locker room after the match.
