Nigeria's goal came in the 2nd minute when Julie Foudy miscleared a ball in the USA box. The loose ball was corralled by Nigeria's Mercy Akide who sent it to Nikiru Okosieme. Okosieme's shot settled into the lower far corner.
The USA knotted the score in the 19th minute when Mia Hamm slid a ball in front of the goal for Michelle Akers. Akers' defender, Ifeanyichukwu Chiejene, inadvertently knocked the ball into her goal for an own goal.
Hamm tallied the game-winner in the 20th minute on a 15-yard blast into the top near corner.
Tiffeny Milbrett pounced on the rebound of a Kristine Lilly shot in the 23rd minute sending her own shot carooming off of Nigeria goalkeeper Ann Chiejine’s right hand and into the right corner pushing the score to 3-1.
In the 32nd minute, Hamm lined up a free kick on the left side of the box, which Lilly headed home for a 4-1 lead.
Seven minutes later, a Foudy service found the head of Akers for a 5-1 advantage.
The USA's last goal of the half came in the 42nd minute when Brandi Chastain nodded a Tiffeny Milbrett cross back in front of the goal where Cindy Parlow powered the ball into the goal with her own head.
Milbrett accounted for the last score of the game in the 83rd minute poking a Parlow cross into the back of the net for a 7-1 win.
Kate Sobrero, who sprained her ankle during training the day before the match, played the first half before coming off at halftime.
