Notes:
USA won the first Olympic Gold Medal awarded in women's soccer. China claimed Silver while Norway won Bronze (2-0 over Brazil). The crowd was the largest the USA had ever played in front of. In the 19th minute, Kristine Lilly carried the ball down the left flank and crossed into the penalty area. Mia Hamm's shot was pushed away by Chinese goalkeeper Gao Hong and deflected off the post. Shannon MacMillan cleaned up the rebound for the first score of the match. In the 32nd minute, China's Zhao Lihong sent a ball over the USA backline. Sun Wen ran onto the ball and chipped it into the goal for the equalizer. The gamewinner came in the 68th minute when MacMillan sprung Joy Fawcett down the right flank. With the option to shoot from a tight angle, Fawcett instead drew Gao off her line and found a wide open Tiffeny Milbrett in front of the net for the Gold Medal winning goal.

USA won the FIFA Fair Play Team Award at the 1996 Olympic Games.

Carla Overbeck earned the 100th cap of her career in this match.
