Notes:
Facing the reigning World Champion and the team who had eliminated them in the semifinals of the 1995 Women's World Cup, the USA again went down by an early goal. In 1995, Norway's Ann Kristin Aarones scored in just the 10th minute. A year later, Linda Medalen staked Norway to a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she received a pass from Agnete Carlsen and beat Briana Scurry from 15 yards out. But unlike 1995, the USA rallied in the Olympic semifinals. Well into the second half, Norway's Hege Riise committed a hand ball inside of the 18-yard box and the USA was awarded a penalty kick, which Michelle Akers converted to knot the game. Needing overtime to settle the match, Julie Foudy dribbled the ball down the field and threaded a pass to Shannon MacMillan who beat Norway's Bente Nordby in the 100th minute for the golden goal winner.

Norway played the final 29 minutes down a player after Agnete Carlsen was shown a red card in the 71st minute when she, as the last defender, pulled Mia Hamm down on a breakaway.
Tiffany Roberts effectively manmarked Norway's Hege Riise throughout the entire match.
Joy Fawcett earned the 100th cap of her career in this match.
