National Team Coaching Highlights
Served as the interim National Team head coach at the 2005 Algarve Cup and was then named the National Team head coach and technical director on 2005.04.08. On 2007.10.22, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati announced that Ryan would not return.
Under his leadership, the U.S. finished third at the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Primarily lined the National Team up in a 4-3-3. Occasionally utilized a 3-4-3 with two marking backs and a sweeper and also a 4-4-2/4-2-4 hybrid.
An assistant coach for the National Team in 2004. Helped the team win the gold medal at the Athens Olympics.
Served as the National Team Staff Coach for Region IV from 2002-2004.
Collegiate Coaching Highlights
Coached Colorado College from 1999-2002 and compiled a 40-28-6 record.
Coached at his alma mater, SMU from 1996-1999 and posted a 37-21-5 record and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 1997.
Coached at the University of Wisconsin from 1986-1993 and led the Badgers to a 108-32-12 record and five trips to the NCAA tournament including two trips to the Final Four (1988 & 1991). The Badgers fell to UNC in the 1991 NCAA title game, 3-1.
Served as an assistant coach for Colorado College's men's team in 1983.
Playing Career Highlights
Played six seasons in the NASL from 1979-1984. Started his career with the Tulsa Roughnecks before being traded to the New York Cosmos in 1979. Played his final five pro seasons with the Chicago Sting and won an NASL title in 1981.
First-Team All-American at SMU in 1978.
