National Team Coaching Highlights
  • Hired as the National Team head coach in 1986 and served as the coach until 1994.08.21.
  • Won the inaugural 1991 FIFA Women's World Championship.
  • Lined the National Team up in an aggressive, attacking 3-4-3.

    Collegiate Coaching Highlights
  • Architect of a dynasty at the University of North Carolina. The first and only head coach in program history, he has led the Tar Heels to 17 NCAA titles (through 2006) as well as a AIAW title and recorded a 629-28-18 all-time record through the 2006 season.
  • Coached UNC's men's team from 1977-1988 and compiled a 172-65-21 record.
  • Named NSCAA Women's Coach of the Year in 1983, 1986, 2003 and 2006. Won the NSCAA Men's Coach of the Year award in 1987.
  • Named ACC Women's Coach of the Year in 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Also earned the ACC Men's Coach of the Year award in 1977.

    Playing Career Highlights
  • Played at UNC from 1971-1973. Earned Second-Team All-ACC honors in 1971 as a forward, and First-Team All-ACC honors in 1972 and 1973 as a defender and midfielder, respectively.
  • Named to the ACC's 50th Anniversary team.
  • Played one year at St. Mary's University in Texas before transferring to UNC.
